SQL Server Management Studio Express is not required by Skyline.
This is just an optional diagnostic tool. On occasions a customer may be asked for a copy of the Skyline databases to investigate a problem. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express can be used to create backup files that can be emailed to the support team for further investigation.
Note: It is strongly recommended that Skyline databases is backed up on a regular basis. Automatic backups should be handled by applications such as Backup Exec, Red Gate or the Maintenance Plans in the full version of SQL.
To install the SQL Server Management Studio Express:
Make sure that the following applications have been installed.
Installing Windows Installer 4.5 Microsoft Windows Installer is a component of the Windows operating system. This should have been installed either with the original software or during a Windows Update. If the software has not been installed you will see a warning message during the SQL Server Management Studio Express installation. If this happens, click OK. The installation procedure is stopped. You need to install Windows Installer 4.5.
Installing Windows PowerShell 1.0 Microsoft Windows PowerShell 1.0 is a component of the Windows operating system. This should have been installed either with the original software or during a Windows Update. If the software has not been installed your installation of SQL Server Management Studio Express will fail when the Setup Support Rules are run. You will then need to install Windows PowerShell 1.0 before you can re-run the Setup Support Rules.
The file opening window opens. Click Save File. The file will be downloaded.
When the file has been downloaded, double click the file to start the installation.
If the Open Executable File window opens, click OK to continue.
If the Open File - Security Warning window opens, click Run to continue.
The files are extracted.
The SQL Server Installation Center window opens.
Select New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.
The installation program checks that the PC meets all the program prerequisites.
When the checks have been completed, click OK to continue.
The Product Key window opens. Click Next to continue.
The License Terms window opens. Select I accept the license terms. Click Next to continue.
The Setup Support Files window opens. Click Install.
The Support Files are installed. When the Setup Support Rules window opens and there are no problems detected, click Next to continue.
Note: If Windows PowerShell is not installed you will see a Failed status reported against the software. DO NOT close the window. Install Windows PowerShell 1.0 and then return to this window. Click Re-run to update the status of each rule listed. The Windows PowerShell status will be updated to Passed.
The Feature Selection window opens. Select the Shared Features Management Tools - Basic. Click Next to continue.
The Disk Space Requirements window opens. Click Next to continue.
The Error and Usage Reporting window opens. Click Next to continue.
The Installation Rules are checked. When the operation is completed, click Next to continue.
The Ready to Install window opens. Click Install to start the installation of SQL Server Management Studio.
During the installation process details of the components being installed can be seen. The complete process may take several minutes.
When the installation process has finished you will be required to restart your computer to complete the installation process. Click OK to acknowledge the information message. Click Next to continue the installation.
The Complete window opens confirming that the installation was successful. Click Close.
You will see the message stating the your PC must be restarted to complete the installation. Click OK.
Close and restart your PC to complete the SQL Server setup.
Once SQL Server Management Studio Express is installed, run the Windows Update again, and install any Critical Windows Updates.
